Hello Gordon and everybody else--
>From time to time I like to caution folks about the 252 and 262 power
supplies. As designed, they did not have a crowbar circuit. That is a
circuit which protects your rig should there be a failure in the power
supply. Typical failure mode is a shorted pass transistor in the supply
which then puts 25-28 volts into the rig -- usually causing great damage.
Ten-Tec sold a small circuit board they called the OVP circuit -- Over
Voltage Protection. The circuit board was small, about one by two inches.
It held an SCR, a fuse, and perhaps a zener diode. The instructions which
came with it directed that it be mounted on the inside of the rear panel of
the supply. Then the large red output wire was cut and soldered to two
points on the OVP board. The last I heard, Ten-Tec had the boards for $15
plus $3 shipping. Hope they still have them.
If anyone is using one of those supplies without the OVP board, I strongly
suggest they install the board or some similar crowbar circuitry into the
supply.
