Yes, Steve, it does.
I have interfaced the Logger program to my Icom IC-765 with the Icom
CT-17 Level Converter. I use a single serial port to the CT-17 and the
program shares that port to allow independent control of the DTR control
line (Pin 20) for keying the radio PTT line.
Through the CT-17, Logger reads the frequency and mode of the radio
constantly - polls about twice per second. This information is displayed
on the logging input form and is automatically placed in the logging data
base when a contact is logged. I think that the program can do additional
things, but I haven't gotten that far yet. ;^)
Logger also provides a terminal program capability for a TNC. I will
shortly use another serial port to connect to an AEA PK232MBX TNC for
RTTY, packet (DXCluster spotting), etc.
Because my computer - like almost all systems these days - has only one
available serial port, I use a USB port expander to gain 4 additional
serial ports and 2 additional USB ports. This is the Entrega HUB-2U4S
product available for about $140 street at most catalog houses.
Otherwise, the program does as you say - "tap into the audio channel"
with the soundcard to provide the data required for PSK31 operation.
I highly recommend Logger as a very flexible and competent logging
program. It is NOT a fancy contest logger but for routine operation it
provides a great front-end for digital operations with easy-to-use
logging capabilities. And, it's free!
