Using the electret mike element depends on its circuitry. Some already
have just one output terminal (plus ground) and so have the bias applied
to the output through a resistor. That means the resistor to the +
supply and a coupling capacitor can be down in the mike plug so one wire
to the electret is enough. If the electret has two wires (bias resistor
internal) then that scheme probably won't work.
Even though the electret has its own preamp, many don't put out as much
as a dynamic microphone. Might be that the Azden microphone has low
output because of acoustical filtering or your voice has little where it
has its maximum output. That frequency response isn't what I'd call good
for SSB. No punch, mostly nasal.
