This is an interesting question from someone who recently asked how to see

All stations calling CQ on CW, RTTY, and Digital (FT8/FT4) contests are automatically spotted hundreds of other stations. Over the last few years, SSB contesters have asked for the option to self-spot, so that SSB contests are more like the others. The Contest Advisory Committee was asked to consider this, and agreed to advise ARRL to accept the request. They did, and it's now part of ARRL SSB contest Rules.

I'm a member of the CAC representing the Pacific Division. I myself don't like it, but most hams I represent do. FWIW, SSB and Digital are my un-favorite modes for contesting.
