I think that the rationale behind the CQWW rule is that looking at
spots of your own station would influence/improve an op's decisions
about band choice, antenna choice or direction, etc.  To me, that's a
lot different than generic space weather indices.

Check out the Reverse Beacon Network
at <http://reversebeacon.net>, now
spotting RTTY activity worldwide.
For spots, please use your favorite
"retail" DX cluster.

That makes sense. Strictly speaking, I suppose truly unassisted should
mean no access to the internet at all during the contest. Not even
spaceweather.com.

Each contest may have its own interpretation on this.
The CQ WW rules FAQ addresses this exact question.
Q: If I am a Single Operator, can I use the Reverse Beacon Network
(RBN) or DX Cluster to look for spots of my own callsign?
A: No, this is not permitted. If you do this, you should enter as
Single Operator Assisted.

So, if I look at my own RBN reports during a contest, am I assisted?
(Not that I've ever done that!)
