Re IARU contest as - many ops including myself have oft stated over the years,
adding HQ stations as unique mults has resulted in the contest becoming
mainly a battle between European multi multi multi multi HQ operators/stations.
IMHO the best contests are those with no multipliers or a limited number of
multipliers, such as countries or zones. The present unseemingly unlimited
number of prefixes now available, not just in the US but everywhere means that
for me at least, contests where prefixes are the only multipliers don't get me
excited at all.

I agree with Steve, and will add a little more info. When the IARU HF
Championship began around 1977, with only ITU Zones as multipliers, it was
possible to win from areas in the world where it was unlikely to win in other
contests. In fact I was part of the M/S team which placed World High in 1979
from VE7WJ, and again World High M/S in 1980 from KH6XX. I believe I won
for the USA in 1984 from AI6V, SOAB.
Then it was decided to change the rules, as Steve noted, to add HQ stations,
which shifted the optimal areas of the world towards the East Coast and Europe
for this contest.

Once upon the time, the IARU contest didn't have HQ mults, just zone mults.
That
meant Europe was only 3 zones, not a zillion countries. Then those in charge
decided that having LU's winning IARU was unfair and added the HQ mults,
which
are just defacto country mults.
