Ed,
Some of these FT8 guys sure seem territorial like nets, SSTVer's and
DXer's. I had several FT8 stations intentionally send digital on top of
me during the ARRL 160 contest this weekend. I was at least a couple
kc's away from the 1840 FT8 frequency. I was on 1842.5 and some guy got
on CW and told me to move. Of course the chicken didn't identify with
his call.
I would beg to differ that FT8 doesn't impact CW contesting. (just like
the 40 meter RTTY frequencies.) The frequency for FT8 on 160 meters is
right in a prime section of the CW band. Why not move them higher in the
band?

As these figures suggest, I have seen no impact on HF Contest participation as a
result of FT8. Its changed VHF contesting but that’s easily changed if the VHF
Contesting community wants to do it.
The enormous impact has been on DXing, in all forms. That’s a genie that
unfortunately is not going back into the bottle. In my case, virtually destroying
that aspect of the hobby for me. It is what it is.
Thankfully, I remain passionate and very upbeat on HF contesting.

Thanks for sharing, was there an increase compared to previous years?
The raw RBN spot archive is actually available online for research by
anyone interested. Go to reversebeacon.net, click on "dx spots", then
"download raw data".
For past 4 years:
2016: 6,065,066 RBN spots
2017: 7,007,320 RBN spots
2018: 8,388,800 RBN spots
2019: 8,745,037 RBN spots
