I have a Sony ICD-PX470. The battery held up through CQWW (but I did turn off
the recorder while sleeping), but out of an abundance of caution I did add a
memory card.
Added a stereo audio splitter, a short stereo audio patch cable, and after a
few minutes of testing recording audio levels, I was good to go. (Although I
do suggest practicing with starting the recording a few times, to reduce the
risk of Murphy appearing at the start.) Total investment was something like
US$75 (with the recorder found discounted at Amazon), and it turned out to be
much simpler than I had expected back when the rule was announced.
I imagine that it's quite possible to do this in a thriftier manner (and as a
fun project) with some ham ingenuity and a well-stocked junk box.

Any suggestions as to what to purchase for an independent Digital recorder that
records for a full 48 hour contest and that is not dependent on batteries for
power. Lots of handheld recorders on the market, but if they need battery
power, this is a possible source for failure to record the entire 48 hour
contest.
