That's not always true, Ria.
I've had Verizon service for years. Yesterday, I was skiing at Arapahoe
Basin, located right on the Continental Divide a little south of I-70.
There is NO Verizon coverage there, yet ATT&T has an antenna (a
repeater) right on top of the main lodge. There was a guy near me
during lunch on the phone and I asked him which service he had. He said
T Mobile, but was using something called Wifi connect or wifi call. I'm
not familiar with it, but it apparently permits calls, texting, and
datat over wifi where a cellular signal isn't available.
I once called Verizon and asked them how to request service in an area
and they said only a land owner could do that. Granted this is a
mountainous area, but a ski resort where there are thousands of people
every day is not covered. Hmm...

If you want serious coverage anywhere outside of large cities, then you
shouldn't look to T-Mobile or Sprint.
Verizon and AT&T have the most coverage and the most reliable coverage. I
had no problems with my iPhone 7+ on Verizon anywhere in Xenia and environs.

I, too, had a T-Mobile iPhone with me and was frustrated because of the
poor coverage. I wanted to get in touch with some friends visiting the
Hamvention so that we could meet. I should have had an 2m/440 HT instead of
the iPhone. We are ham radio operators, not iPhone operators.
I had a very good time at the Hamvention.

100% agree with Bill's marks.
One more F to add - T-Mobile coverage was almost nonexistent. There are
only 2 spots here and there where I got 1 bar of signal and was able to
send an SMS or had basic EDGE internet. ATT and Verizon worked fine.
