Not XP. If you're running XP at this point and you have it connected to the
Internet you are at severe risk of infection and having your PC turned into a
Zombie without your knowledge. Seriously. Just Don't Do It. If you're on XP,
find a cheap copy of Win7 or 8 or 8.1, or even the Beta of Win 10, upgrading to
the final on July 29th when it's released. You're right about Classic Shell on
Win 8, though. Turns that steaming pile of code known as Win 8.x into something
usable. You'll find Win10 does a much better job on the desktop and looks
halfway nice at times. The start menu is still weird but not as bad as Win 8.
But for any modern ham applications, anything post-XP (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 or 10)
will work acceptably well and all function about the same in terms of where
program components have to live. N1MM+ installs cleanly and correctly. Others
still can't be placed in the Program Files (or Program Files (x86)) hierarchy
since their data components are part of the program file--a huge no-no post XP.
For those, just put them in C:\Ham or something like that and they'll run quite
happily.

If you like the look and feel of Win 7 or WinXP but it's time to upgrade the PC
for some reason, and Win8 is your only option, install the free program Classic
Shell. It is highly configurable and will provide you the look and feel of XP
or 7...your choice.
