Dave,
The ARRL 10M contest checks the RST. I know, because I do the
logchecking for this contest and wrote the logchecking software.
We are particularly interested in the "T", or more specifically its
presence or absence. Before you ask why we do this, its because dupes
and mults count by mode in this contest, and we want to be sure QSOs are
worked on the claimed mode. You'd be surprised how sloppy some people
are in keeping the mode accurate in their logging program while they're
operating, particularly without computer-control of the radio.
If you make a QSO on CW, but the sent and received reports are R/S only
(i.e., "59" instead of "599") was the report logged incorrectly or is
the mode wrong? For QSOs where we don't have the "other" log
(typically about 50% of the QSOs in a 10M contest can be verified
direct/y), there is no way to independently check the mode.
We have been checking the 10M contest this way for more than a decade.

 1. Log checking does not include the signal report for any major
contest I'm aware of. It isn't even checked for DXCC.
 2. There is no such thing as a "real" signal report when nobody knows
what kind of antenna you are using, how high it is, what your
surrounding terrain is like, or even whether you have your antenna
pointed in their direction (such as when you're running a pileup). The
best your signal report does is tell the other guy how well you are
hearing him, not how strong his signal is into Thailand ... they
aren't really the same thing. That being said, out of contests I also
try my best to give an accurate assessment of how well I'm copying
somebody.

For those who enjoy giving accurate signal reports, try giving accurate
signal reports during contests.
UR RST 579 OM.
I wonder is the signal report line is even a part of the contest
checking,
similar to the Zones not checked of times past.
Out of contests, I try to give real signal reports on the assumption
that
my callers will appreciate knowing how they are REALLY getting into
Thailand. 73,
