Interesting situation. I think the way to look at this is... if Herb
had not been present, could you have operated the contest in the same
manner? Since the answer is clearly "no", it means he contributed to
the operation (even though he didn't log any QSOs), and so you should
have been a multi-op entry. Whether or not you could operate the same
without your wife bringing you coffee is another matter:)
So my take is that, whilst you did not violate FCC rules, you probably
really didn't qualify for a single-op entry using extra-class
privileges.
