SO2R has probably had the biggest impact on overall run rates, but packet/RBN
has had a huge impact on S&P rates - and also impacted the old decision of when
to leave a run frequency for single radio ops.
For little guns who spend a lot time S&Ping, keeping up a 60+ rate was pretty
good without spotting assistance. That meant if you did stop and find a run
frequency, as long as you ran faster than 60 you would stick with it. But now
with packet and RBN, I can easily maintain 100+ rates doing "power S&P"
changing the decision about when to abandon a run frequency. It makes it that
much more important to ignore the 10 minute rater meter.
SO2R combines the two, and provides real time intelligence to make band change
decisions - so much the better. But just looking at the RBN feed gives similar
information for 1 radio op band changes.
