Actually I *do* do that..
I've found that when things are slow, even a modest reduction in speed can 
bring out a noticeable increase in callers.  So I'll be running at 
something like 22-24wpm when someone I know can work much faster calls.  I'll 
QRQ to something like 30-32wpm for just that QSO and then back it back 
down to 22-24.
That did turn out to be a mistake in one case, when it turned out the 
"QRQ-capable" caller had a guest op who wasn't quite as fast as the host...
