For those who might have missed it - the Alaskan QSO Party took place
yesterday. Since Alaska has like only four "counties" - they used a
different format. A special event callsign was obtained and then one
very energetic individual went around and enlisted help with other
operators and stations to put that callsign on the air on all bands and
modes on one day.
The result was a lot of lunatic contesters running around trying to work
them on as many band/modes as possible. They are goin to announce who
won that competition, but our money is on W7EW.
This concept has some nice attributes:
1. It isn't a contest - have fun.
2. Creates pileups.
3. Promotes activity.
4. It can be a contest for those who want it to be.
Congratulations to Rich, KL7RA, on a second very successful special event in
KL7 (the first being W1AW/KL7). Maybe this new kind of QSO party is a good
starting place for some other groups to plan a similar event.
