I would guess some start as soon as they have two
logs. Particularly the large contests...
It takes a lot of time to compare all of the logs in
say CQWW or ARRL DX. Then you also have to translate
the paper logs into digital format...
Smaller contests depend on "free" labor :o)
Some simply time the results to stir up activity in an
upcoming event.
I can see arguments such as Jerry W1VE's "instant"
results and "anticipation" results. Posting on 3830 is
a good way to have an idea of standings before
official results.
