I misspoke about jets closing at "14 miles per second." Aircraft speeds are measured in nautical miles per hour (knots) and commercial jets fly at about 450 knots (about 500 mph). That's about seven nautical miles per minute (not second). So two jets head-on close at 14 nautical miles per minute. Like I said, it's been 35 years. (At the time, sometimes if felt like 14 nm per *second*).
