Well, the WWYCers had a contest with a viable serial number.  You start the 
number with any letter/number combo you want. You then transmit that 
alphanumeric sequence to the next station.  That alphanumeric number is now the 
next person's exchange for the next QSO.  He then receives a report from 
another station and that now becomes the ham's exchange for one QSO.  So on and 
so forth.  

No databases, no prefills.  You either copy the exchange or your dont...
