I'm with the others who say to use what works. e.g. Alpha and Delta can sound identical in difficult conditions. Switch to America and Denmark and you'll get through. I too try to use phonetics familiar to the listener. e.g. to a JA I'm sometimes Victor Echo 7 Fujiyama Osaka. Had several of them laugh at me - don't know why. Another big winner was during the Florida QSO Party when I was Volusia Escambia 7 Flagler Osceola.
