Actually, he said he could "type" 160 characters in 57 seconds. The
problems with SMS are the difficulty of entering a text message using
12 keys (multiple keystrokes for each character) and the delays through
the network. Network delays become more significant as congestion
increases.
K7JA was sending about 30 WPM by my calculation (51 characters in 18
seconds +/-). He was not even close to his best speed ... and the SMS
"typist" was still typing when Chip finished.
