Hello Pete,
Operating form a location "out West" does have some disadvantages, for
example when the band is just starting to open for you and it's already
closing in interesting places like the Middle East. That being said, the
main disparity is still a matter of North/South. The further South you are
the better, regardless of conditions or point of the sunspot cycle. For
example, working JA from Texas is pretty trivial compared to working them
from North Dakota or VE4. It's frequently easier to work Europe from Dan
Diego than it is from Green Bay.
Personally I think you draw a 300 mile diameter circle around your QTH and
compare yourself to people in your circle. It's a different world for those
who live in geographically advantageous areas, like Indiana :)
