Upon reflection it seems that CONTESTING may be the ONE area that would MOST appeal to a younger generation that has been raised on video games. Especially CW, where both the pace and dexterity play a big role in success, much like that of a video game. >Contesting may need to become the featured aspect of ham radio to encourage the youth of today to get a license. What is considered to be a scourge on the bands by many non-contesters might hold the key to the survival of the hobby. I couldn't agree more John! I would add one other area which has recently become an interest of mine. Portable QRP operating (i.e. combine radio with outdoor activities like backpacking, camping, etc.) My stepson is 22 and is home on leave from Iraq. He is an avid backpacker and has held a Tech license for a number of years, but has never bothered to learn the code. When I showed him my AT Sprint II (8 ounce QRP station) and the Adventure Radio Society's website below, he got very excited. ARS also holds monthly 2-hour Spartan Sprints which are a blast, especially when you try it from an outdoor location. http://www.arsqrp.com/ Will be interesting to see if he follows through when he returns permanently. 73, Bill W4ZV _______________________________________________ CQ-Contest mailing list CQ-Contest@contesting.com http://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/cq-contest |
