Moving the line scores to the web implies that we will be able to get the
results faster -- if for not other reason, just from the mere fact that we
won't have to wait 2 months or more for the final copy to be sent to the
printer, printed in the magazine, and left to the tender mercies (if any) of
the US Postal (alleged) Service.
Isn't this a good thing? (Besides, only the line scores won't be in, right?
The contest write-ups and soapboxes will be -- though I suspect the on-line
soapboxes will be greater.)
Look, the decision has been made, and I suspect that it's now irrevocable.
At best the combinded kvetching from groups like this one might put it off
for another 6 months -- maybe. But it's coming. So rather than kvetch
about mass conspiracies and make unfounded financial allegations, why don't
we put our collective heads together and figure out how to best exploit this
new tool to the benefit of the contesting community?
In fact, let's go one step further: Why not suggest to the ARRL that anyone
submitting an electronic log have the option to request that the final
results be emailed to them, line scores and all? It could be done as an
additional Cabrillo line in the header section, for one.
...oh, and about those comments the other day regarding the potential young
amateur buying QST off the newstand: Newstand? What newstand? At least
here in the Pittsburgh area, QST long since disappeared from the magazine
racks. Even Borders, which carries CQ & 73 and 10 million other
hobby-related magazines, doesn't carry QST (I asked at both of my local
ones -- they say they never heard of it!). I think we have a bigger problem
of getting QST into someone's hands to solve long before we start worrying
about what's in the magazine itself! (I shudder to think that someone's
first exposure to Amateur Radio these days might be one of Wayne's rants.
But I digress)

Subject: RE: [CQ-Contest] ARRL report on line scores decision
In a sense, this is one positive for promoting more contest activity
because now the non-member who participates in an ARRL contest can see his
score published on the Internet. As a non-member and not a recipient of
QST, I assume it was difficult to find out how they had scored compared to
others in the same category. This is what is called observing "the glass is
half full."

ARRL has been publishing contest results in Members Only for the first
month or so, but then moving them to the open section. So non-members
have been able to get a free ride (if one were willing to wait a
month) - no need to join or to even buy QST to see the results. I
suspect this procedure will continue.
