I always suspected the reason they didn't was partly because RS-232 needs a 
-12v
supply, which means a little more work.  Nowdays, using a charge pump IC or
equivalent it's pretty cheap and easy, but some years ago it would have 
required
a chopper, transformer, filters, regulator, etc, etc.
Just a guess.
