[CQ-Contest] PC software for RTTY

Subject: [CQ-Contest] PC software for RTTY
From: k5zd@ultranet.com (Randy Thompson)

My original request:

I have a PC with SoundBlaster card running Windows 95. Is there any
software out there that will let me use this set up to do RTTY? I thought
K6STI may have done something at one time but haven't heard anything about
it lately.

Response:

It appears there are two main choices (K6STI+WF1B or W5XD), and a shareware
program that might be a fun alternative.

K6STI does have some software that does this - but if you
want to do a contest you still need wf1b's logging program.

It works very well. As good as most/any of the HAL
interface cards and much better than a PK-232.

Ron (K5DJ) is selling a contest logging program
written by W5XD WriteLog for windows that has
a decoder built into the software that uses your
sound card and seems to work as well or better than
the K6STI software. This of course also includes
a logging program - so overall I think it would cost
less.

The K6STI/WF1B combo will run on a DOS machine (I am pretty sure).

You will need windows to run WriteLog. It will run under win 3.11
but of course works better with windows 95. I also think
there are limits on CPU to do the decodeding but I think
that may be true for the STI software as well.

K6STI works great. He's constantly updating it. It's called RITTY.
Also, the WF1B contesting software, RTTY, allows it as one of the
choices. Even has a FFT/Tuning display on the logging screen.

I haven't had much time to play with RTTY but I know this:
I took 2nd place in WW RTTY the first time I tried. My first RTTY QSO
was about 4 days before the contest.
I used a PK232.
The RITTY program knocks the socks off of a PK232.

Hi Randy - Oh no, not another real contester getting into RTTY.
It's making contesting as competitive as the "real" modes. Anyway,
yes, K6STI has a pgm called RITTY. I've heard it's excellent, but
haven't used it myself. Also W5XD's windows contesting pgm called
RTTYWrite/Writelog has a sound card/RTTY driver in it (I haven't used
this one either).
FYI I use a HAL P38 card with WF1B software for contesting.
I've considered getting K6STI RITTY, but I already use K8CC's Contest
Voice Blaster for a DVK, and didn't want the wiring to get any more
nighmarish, with the swithcing requirements.

Randy, you can download a demo version of my RITTY 2.0 program at
www.megalink.net/~n1rct.

Best bet is RTTYRite by W5XD and distributed by K5DJ k5dj@easy.com!

It includes the SB stuff and is $50.

Straight from the horses mouth:

>It's $150 (half the price of a TNC but with superior performance). You
can

I played with the demo and its pretty incredible. It picks out and
copies signals I can barely hear with my ears. Has autotune, built
in bandpass filters, etc.

Check out RTTYrite at http://people.delphi.com/w5xd/writelog.html as a
candidate. The total product includes another RTTY program that allows you
to use the SoundBlaster card in lieu of a TU to transmit/receive RTTY.

The two options are RTTYRite/Writelog by W5XD, which is a real, integrated
Windows program, and the combination of WF1B's RTTY contest program with
RITTY by K6STI as a front end in a DOS window. However, RITTY can be used
by itself for general use and has PACTOR as well as RTTY.

They both perform very well, rivaling the latest HAL cards, etc. For
general RTTY work, I'd pick Writelog by W5XD. It includes a good logging
program/tracker all built together. At present I prefer the later
combination for contest work. RITTY v 2 has "autotune", which fine tunes
the freq and shift for you automagically, and also allows you to track
those tones when you transmit using the sound cards output. This can speed
S&P operations considerably and also help track those wierd shifts that are
out there. For multicomputers, Writelog uses Ethernet for networking.
RTTY uses the normal COM porting.

K6STI's RITTY S/W is terrific! It also now does Pactor. All registered
owners are authorized to share the demo, which is a recv only version
without the license file. Let me know, and I'll e-mail it to you. It
works best with the Creative Sound Blaster but will support SOME clones.
You'll probably get lots of positive responses, so I'll wait to send it.
Brian also has a great DSP program using the same sound board. I don't
know whether it's available as a demo, though. He has built some really
sophisticated machine language code for these modules, so don't evaluate
the price on a cost-per-byte basis! If you try it out, I'd be interested
in your reactions.

Hi Randy, K6STI did write a great DSP program to do RTTY with
a Soundblaster. He just released Version 2 of it which has some
great operating features. Relatively easy to use and if you want
to get into RTTY contesting, it interfaces with WF1B's contest
logger which seems to be the CT or TR of the RTTY world. He has
an ad in every NCJ and I think in QST. You can get a demo version
(crippleware) from http://www.megalink.net/~n1rct .

Randy, try here. This looks like what you want......

Here is a very cool program to try out. I made quite a few QSO's with it
during the NAQP RTTY test a few weeks ago.

W6OTC and I are off to HV to do CQWW RTTY using RITTY <Brian's
s/w> using nothing but laptops -- no external tncs. This stuff will blow
your mind. Have fun.
