Several of our usual PVRC operators have had to drop out this time due to
personal circumstances. I'm looking for two or three well qualified
kick-butt contesters! We've got plenty of hardware here (and east
coast propagation...) for you to put your talents to work!
Discount fares on SouthWestern Airlines (and their competitors) have made
travel to BWI Airport (20 miles from W3LPL) very inexpensive this year.

Most every sign-up came with a note saying they would go longer if busy.
Frequencies are +/- QRM & typ. may reach as far as 3-4 KHz from posted freq.
CALLING CQ: A suggestion. If we call CQ WAS or WAS QRP de K6.... etc,
we give those not on QRP-L an indication of what we're doing. FSFD type
calling might be too cryptic for all but ourselves. However 'FS' is fine
when busy. Exchange RST, State/Province/Country, and Name. Power level is
nice to know.
ALASKA & HAWAII: Jim-AL7FS is back from Hawaii and will activate ALASKA as
soon as KL7Y's 40M beam repairs are complete. Watch for Jim's postings.
Thanks to him for the HI effort.
KB0ROL is in HAWAII until Jan. 25 and will post his time/freq info to the
group when ready. Best guess is Thursday 0200-0400 UTC on 20M or 40M. More
info soon.
If you want to sign-up for an upcoming State, e-mail band/freq/time directly to:
congress@magpage.com
Thanks for all the responses/encouragement and suggestions. Lets have a blast!

Subject: Help me ID photo
Message-ID: <19970121135605.AAB12601@LOCALNAME>
I'm going through my collection of pictures in an attempt to organize
them (I've gotten zillions sent to me over the decades).
I've hit one which I cannot place exactly. Can you help?
It's a picture of the inside of the shack. It is a very tiny
shack, housed in a pair of bookshelves. It looks like at least
one wall has panelling on it. There are three identical rigs
shown: all signal ones! Two of them are "off to the side" (left)
on top of a small bookshelf. The third (active) rig is to the right.
There is the old Ham M style rotor box to its left. There is
a black leather chair in front. That's all that can be seen in the pix.
For some reason, I remember the QTH as Huntington Beach, CA, but
I could be wrong. I THINK that the owner did electron scanning of
bad parts (IC's) for NASA or some other gov't agency. I'm pretty
sure he had a 2 x 3 callsign.
Does anybody know who the owner of this station is (old/current call)?
Tnx...
de Doug

There is an (apparently) abandoned tower on the south edge of the town
of Florence. It's a beauty, insulated base and guys, extensive radial
system (3" CU strap), etc. There is NOTHING at/near the base ... no sign
of a building. Appears to be about right for 160M. Data plate on base
says made by Racal/Decca, Ltd., Canada ... as ex-U S Coast & Geodetic
Survey radio tech, I'm familiar with several "2 MHZ" navigation systems
made by Decca and other companies and I suspect this tower was part of a
similar system. We (USCGS) used to put these up and house equipment in
plywood box for a few weeks, then tear tower down and move on. Maybe
it's now easier/cheaper to abandon tower after a project.
Can anyone shed any light on this tower and it's mate/mates? Going to
county courthouse to locate land owner, try to track down more info.
No, it's not a BC tower ... locals say town's never had a station, and
could find no one who could tell me how long the tower's been there.
GPS has long-replaced the 2 MHZ technology for mapping, surveying, etc.,
so the thing may be quite old, even though it's in pristine condition.
