Some of the J3A contest team are at this writing in route to Grenada.
By Wednesday evening (Grenada time) all nine of the group should be on
the island.
One of the DX bulletin types indicated that J3A would be MS. We will be
a MM (multi-multi) entry. QSL'a for J3A go to WA8LOW.

and after the contest on WARC bands, RTTY & CW. Most of the group

Forget the WARC bands. They don't count in CQWW so what good are they?

Some have asked abt Force12 antennas.
FYI, I put up a Force12 3 element 20m monobander last year.
I am pleased with its construction & performance. Last January it was my
only antenna to survive an ice storm and so far this year it has taken 2
near misses from the hurricanes. My beam/tower is on an island in the
Chesapeake Bay, so it gets constant wind. I have to replace a old
10m monobander (radio shack) above it as the ice bent it. and need a
2nd tower for a 15m monobander.
WHen compared to my past experience with Mosley & HYgain beams,
the F12 does not flap in the wind like the Mosley nor weigh in heavy like
my Hygain.
I can only say that the F12 is easy to assemble and easy to put
up. My 10 & 15 m beams will be F12.

Just read a week's worth of "Da Birds" stuff here. Several
years ago I had the same problem, and found the solution to
be a little tough to build, but VERY EFFECTIVE.
Birds don't like things that MOVE or MAKE NOISE. So, I got
one of those famous plastic owls from Sears for about $10.,
and then I modified it to move and make noise. Movement was
a contrived "flapping wings" thing, made out of sheet teflon,
and pop-rivetted to the owl. Those neat little wings flapped
in the breeze very nicely. Always a breeze at 100 ft.
The NOISE part was a robust speaker mounted inside the plastic
owl and wired up with some two-conductor twisted pair, and ran
down to my shack. I could see the top of the 100 foot tower
from my shack's outside entrance door. Then two options were
implimented. One, I could hook up a microphone / amplifier
to the twisted pair and TALK to those feathery friends....very
loudly. They vamooshed dern quickly. Secondly, I could just
feed a continuous loop of audio....all kinds of crazy sounds...
into the twisted pair. Screeching eagle sounds, dogs barking,
owls hooting, etc. Neat stuff. During the daytime, NO BIRDS
pooping on my antennas.
Now, my solution became a hobby in its own right. It was almost
as much fun messing with the birds as it was DXing. Only
problem was....after a couple of days, NO BIRDS to mess with.
Birds don't pearch on antennas at night, so that wasn't a problem
Only thing I am surprised about is the several comments from a
few guys on this reflector saying NOTHING COULD BE DONE. How
un-inventive. Even taking down the tower!!! good grief!! There
are solutions for everything....usually available on a couple of
reflectors.

There are lots of CHEAP plastic things to put on top of masts.
` K-Mart or Target sell cheap plastic drinking cups that easily
fit over mast tops. Ample use of Duct Tape did the trick for
me for 8 years at one location. Those plastic tops to cans
of shaving cream (from Gillette, etc) are about 2-1/2 inches
in diameter too. They work similarly. More Duct Tape.

Haven't had that problem but hadn't gone to the top of either of the two
towers in some months. When I went up one and KO7V went up my other one
we each found a dead bird at the bottom of each mast (inside it). They
apprently went in the top looking for a nest site or shelter for the
night and couldn't get back out, eventually working their way to the
bottom. Guess it makes sense to cap the top of the mast. I know I've
seen caps made for pipe -- have seen some on other people's masts --
wonder if jamming a tennis ball (or whatever is the right size) in the
top is an appropriate solution.

The gang at G0KPW have decided to make use of the new UK contest
callsign facility and will be signing M6T this year, multi multi.
Spent yesterday at the site near Ipswich about six miles from the east
coast of England. We have a few problems this year because the field
where we normally place the 80m 4-square, 20m stack and 160m
vertical is in use by the farmer so we have to squeeze all the antennas
into a smaller area. 'Stealth' beverages will be placed carefully between
the rows of emerging barley some time on Friday....

Just to note that I will be active from Andorra in the CQWW.
I will be operating from C31LD's station which should give a good
signal on all bands despite the surrounding mountains. (Monoband beams on
80/40/20/15/10).
The call will be C31LJ if the operation is SOAB, or C31LD if we decide
to operate Multi-single. That will be determined later in the week.
