It's interesting to see the comments regarding what ARRL employees
respond to your e-mail questions and those that don't.
I earlier this week sent a message to Dave Sumner regarding the fact
that messages to K5FUV and the DXCC Desk never are replied to or even
acknowledged. I often send in messages sent to me from DX stations
wanting their DX information included in W1AW DX Bulletins. Because I
post the bulletins to the DX Reflector the DXers use me as a
reply/input route.
On the other hand, I always get immediate replies from contest@arrl.
org usually by Tom Hogerty and from blunt@arrl.org from Billy himself.
There are others I regular write to in the VEC, RIB, and Membership
Services areas that all respond within the day.
Some people may want to do as I have recently started doing and that
is to CC to k1zz@arrl.org on every message I send to ARRL
destinations where the replies usually don't come back. My recent
message regarding the DXCC Desk was reeived by Dave and forwarded
onto K8CH for a responce which I am still waiting for but can at
least quote a K1ZZ message that it was routed for a responce.
While I respect Dave and would normally not run to the head of every
company I deal with, employees at ARRL HQ must keep in mind they are
all employees of a membership organization supported by our funds and
are to service our requests. Got a bitch with a customer ? Tough luck,
as the saying goes, the customer is always right and deserves
respect of an answer. Especially if he's wrong and needs an
explanation.

Yesterday I had a lengthy conversation with Paul Middlefield KD6NUH,
National Sales Manager for Kenwood, concerning the rumor that they
would be selling Amateur Radio equipment in places such as Truck Stops
and CB outlets. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here is
Kenwoods side and what they are doing.
Somehow the rumor got started, it was printed in QST and even a letter
from a ham stating this was going to happen. Not even close to the
truth per Kenwood.
First, why should Kenwood start another distribution channel? Kenwood
has 18 states with no dealers, 24 states with only one dealer. That
leaves 8 states with 2 or more dealers. Not a very good channel of
distribution. In a survey of 2500 new hams, 1/3 didn't buy a radio, 1/3
bought from Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu and Alinco, the remaining 1/3 bought
from Radio Shack with over 7,000 stores. This means Kenwood, Icom,
Yaesu and Alinco are competing for 1/3 of the new ham business.
Solution: They have established Master Distributors who are Amateur
Radio operators and it is their responsibility to screen other Amateurs
who would like to open up their own business or add to their own
business as sales and service. Only those qualified need apply. We have
recently had a Kenwood outlet open here in the North County of San
Diego, sales and service, and it has been welcome by all the local
hams.
Paul assured me that Kenwood is in this market strictly for Amateur
Radio and they are doing everything in their power to see that their
radios stay in proper channels of distribution. If you would like to

This is the kind of damage that unfounded rumors can cause and I
appologize for adding to it. Sometimes what seems funny to one person,
becomes fact to another and ends up causing others a lot of grief.

I can't explain this, but in fairness I must report that answers from the
DXCC section to my very occasional e-mails have been exceptionally prompt.
The last two were each answered in less than one hour. I never bother them
with questions about routine processing status, and also I search all other
conceivable leads to information before going to "the source". But probably
you met those requirements too Bob, in which case I just don't know. Bill K
told me once how many e-mails arrive daily - I've forgotten, but it was
some awesome number.

help, contesters!
kim, kn6yu, is trying to get his icom 737 to
work with ct 9.2? in time for CQP.
he has used "hamview products" rigview/logview/packview
which talk successfully to his 737, using hamview's
comport/radio interface cable.
ct can't seem to do it though... "radio timeout"
*although sometimes* ct picks up the correct frequency
from the radio... (but won't follow or cause band
changes, etc.)
has anyone ever made the combination
486/hamview cable/ic737 work together? any hints?

morning if and when the mongo pileups resulting from my
cq-ing start to die down.
