Subject: Amplifier Summary
Message-ID: <1.5.4.32.19960510212318.006669d0@southwind.net>
For the past several weeks, I have been researching amplifiers. Here is a
summary of what I have found from comments on the reflector....
1. Buy and Alpha - now that is over, I can continue. Really, I don't have
that kinda of cash, so I am going to move on.
2. Buy and Henry 3D - see the comment above. By the way, most of the
comments said this was the only amp made by Henry people should buy.
3 Ameritron. Hands down here, the winner was the Al-1200 in the under
$2000 class. The worse comment I got was the blower noise. I guess, from
what people sent me, is that the blower noise has been cured to a certain
degree in later models. They kept commenting that it was heavy...I think
that is a GOOD thing guys. The AL-84 came in second. The guys like the
1200 because it would drive to full power output with fewer watts input than
the 84. No one commented on the other Ameritron amps. Goes to show you,
you gotta have 1500 watts or more to compete?????
4. The also rans - which included Command Technolgies, QRO Technologies,
and Ten Tec. There are a lot of design and philosopical differences in all
these amps. From what was sent to me, these amps are really for the casual
rag-chewer and casual contester. According to the literature, these amps
are goood to go, but some people commented on poor long term performance.
One person said the Ten TEc Centurion (not the TITAN which is not in
production anymore and I would rate 2.5) arc in the plate cap when loaded
light. Sounds like an SB200. The "Technologies" people have solid amps,
but haven't had that many out there to give a good reason to buy one. Also,
the comments I got on them were less than enthusiastic.
5. Building your own - I was surprised at the number of these comments. Is
anyone building these days. I can't find two watt resistors in this state
let alone a variable capacitor. I know, you can buy that stuff somewhere,
but that is not viable for me at this time. A lot of guys are still rolling
their own and do so for less than a grand with power output of 1500 watts or
more. Would be a interesting discussion as to who is all doing that. I
built a pair of 3-500z about 20 yeares ago and about killed myself. That is
why I took up journalism than engineering. Safer to write about it!
HAAARRRRRR.
That was the lot of the action I got. Comments are welcome, but remember I
have real feelings guys. No flaming me. I can always rewrite the summary,
Good Contesting.
