Yesterday UPS delivered my boomset. Think I'm gonna like this
addition to my station! I noticed in the brochure that came
with the set, a recommendation/idea to increase the value of the
feedback resistor on the microphone preamp by 150K. This mod is
for Icom rigs and is said to increase the "talk power" when used
with the Heil equipment. Has anyone done this? What were the
results? How difficult is it to do?
Thanks,

I appologize to all for not including my name and call in my response. It
was an oversight on my part. I feel comfortable with what I said and please
don't take this as an attempt at keeping my self anonymous and hide within
the "bowels" of the internet. 73 all

Funny how much weight I place on reflector comments based on
someone's call sign. Skoch92707 and Steve Bookout have their own
opinions on the WRTC and sent them forth for the world to read.
However, neither person felt reputable enough to relinquish their
near anonymity.
I guess I learned that I pay more attention to contest discussions
when I learn a commenter's callsign and then relate that to my
knowledge of what that person has done in contesting. If K3ZO or
N6TR or N2IC etc., write something, I pay more attention to it simply
because I know these guys have the contest experience and savvy to
make meaningful posts. I realized that for the past two years, when
I see a post from a name I don't recognize, or with a reply address
without a callsign, I immediately go to the end of the message to see
the callsign of the poster before I read the message--just so I know
who is making the statement.
So, I was disappointed to see that Steve Bookout (who is likely NJ4F)
and Skoch92707 (who I can't figure out yet) neglected to let us know
who they are with the method most hams use to recognize each other.
Therefore, even though each had the guts to let us know their fair
opinion, I cannot place any credence on their comments and must place
them in the trash where they belong. I strongly advise others to do
the same with "illegitimate" comments such as these (more "computer
geekingly" known as FLAME BAIT).

BTW, great job WRTC organizers! Thank you. I view this event as
something for which I have aimed for 20 years.

SEVERAL SEA MFGRS MAKE MINI KEYBOARDS SUCH AS BTC, SEJIN AND FOCUS.
THE TRICK IS TO FIND A SOURCE. DARTEK AT 800-832-7835 CARRIES 4
DIFFERENT TYPES BUT THEIR PRICES ARE OUTRAGEOUS. ANYONE KNOW OF A
REASONABLY PRICED SOURCE??

Fine, here's my reply to a public, mis-guided, personal attacks:
I'm sending "unsubscribe" to the appropriate address.
(I "have been removed from the CQ-Contest mailing list.")
Don't bother flaming me on the reflector...
I won't see it: And no-one else will care.
*Thanks to those who sent personal messages in support
of my plea for some sense of community--there are only
so many of us contesters after all.
*My apologies to anyone I've unintentionally angered
(regarding PacketCluster), etc. I was merely trying to promote
intelligent debate regarding contest-related issues.
I'll be back--after a needed "vacation" from the reflector.
For now, I have more important things to do with my time.
See ya later. --KB1GW

Excuse me, but I believe that *BY DEFINITION* a
playoff/championship/invitational event is restricted-entry. If there
was a universally-accepted yardstick for measuring operator quality, and
there is not, then WRTC participation could be made completely
deterministic and based on valid metrics. In the meantime, it's no
different from the NCAA Invitational, the All-Star Game (either with
coaches or fans voting), etc. All of these events are open in the sense
that all athletes have an equal chance to put in the years of hard work
to be recognized.
Yes, the invitees are often heard from mega-stations, often not their own.
No, Joe Rookie does not get handed the 20-meter chair at W3LPL for CQ WW
SSB with the dial set to 14150. However, I'll just bet that Joe Rookie is
*welcome* to help out and *learn* and, just maybe, get into the mult
chair. Then next year, get an off-band chair. Then...after showing the
ability and desire, maybe moving up to run with the Big Dogs. That's how
you do it, son. Not by demeaning those who have paid the dues.
It is not possible to invite every noteworthy operator. The logistics of
getting the stations together, etc. is mindboggling. The committee has
made a reasonable attempt at getting input from the contest community on
the selection process. No, it's not perfect...so? Show me something
that is. I've worked long and hard on a rating system for operators that
is just a first step towards a yardstick we can all use. I *know* what
the issues are and how intractable they can be.
If you nay-sayers have a better idea, then get busy and publish it. I'm
sure the group putting together the next event will be delighted to hear
your ideas. Better yet, why not get out of your easy chairs and put one
on?
As a WRTC-90 committee member, I can assure you that having a "closed
party for contest demi-gods" is the farthest thing from anyone's mind.
The operator selection process is agonized over and is probably the most
difficult and emotional part of the organizing process. Don't be so
quick to trivialize it without having taken part in such an event.
And if, perchance, I see NJ4F and whoever "Skooch" is in the Top Ten year
after year, I will salute your performance and applaud your selection as
a WRTC-20xx competitor. Until then, I'm afraid you'll have to stew while
the rest of us are having a Very Good Time!
