Gentlemen: My old Rohn HDBX-48 bit the dust this past winter and I am
replacing it with 80 feet of rohn 45. The base is very large for a guyed
tower set up, however I still need to set the pier pin in the existing base.
What kind of bonding agent have some of you used to bond the pier pin to the
base. The pin is 12 inches in length and the hole I will drill will be
approximately 7-8 inches in depth. So, how do I keep my 4 year old from

Hi,
Two or three weeks ago I requested opinions on my broken TailTwister
situation, as well as thoughts on replacing it with a Yaesu G-1000SDX.
Thanks to all who responded (hope I haven't missed any in this list):
N4ZR, K5FUV, K7FR, AB5YG, KE3Q, AA8SM, W7NI, EA7KW, K2UVG, W5ASP, K7LXC (who
is a goldmine of mechanical information), KJ7CH, and KR9A.
Here is a summary of responses received:
On the Yaesu - generally I received good remarks. The control
box is good looking, and the 450 degree rotation and preset function are
very good features. One warning - be extremely careful not to overtighten
the mast backet. (The material it is made of will easily break.) Also, many
respondents did not feel comfortable with the idea of drilling the mast and
bolting it through the center hole in the rotator bracket, as is recommended by
the manufacturer. One adverse comment heard from several people is that the
service from Yaesu is generally not good - although at least one op was sent
a new mounting bracket free when his original cracked from overtightening.
On repairing the TailTwister - my rotator was freewheeling in the
wind. Bill (K5FUV) suggested I check the bolts which hold the case together.
I sure wish he had been right about my particular case as it might have
been a simpler (i.e., cheaper) problem. The repair possibilities are:
1. the Hygain factory has a flat rate $90 repair, no matter
what is wrong. This seems to be an excellent deal.
2. Norm Jeweler (Norm's Rotor Service, 5263 Agro Dr, Frederick,
MD 21701, tel (301)874-5885) will also repair them. He
offers the convenient option of sending you a rebuilt
rotor first, so you can make a single trip up the tower
to do the replacement. You then have 30 days to send yours
to him, at which time he will rebuild it and charge you for
whatever was done. (If you don't send yours in 30 days, you
will be charged for the invoice price which comes with the
rebuilt unit.)
I chose option #2 before hearing about option #1, so I ended up paying $185.
The damage started with a sheared brake wedge, but was severely compounded by
the freewheeling that occurred over a period of 2 or 3 weeks before I could
get it down. (I was severely hampered in this regard by my work schedule and
the weather.) In retrospect, option #1 would have been a better deal $$$-wise,
but I am happy with Norm's service. His response time was excellent, and the
rebuilt unit works fine. I still have the Yaesu rotor, and am contemplating
the possibilities of trying to return it vs. keeping it as a spare unit.

I think that "painting to tree height" comes from the Portland Oregon area
zoning requirements. They have evergreens out there, so it might make some
aesthetic sense (now there is a contradiction of terms). If you live in a
deciduous forrest, do you paint it green for summer and brown for winter?
Paint is generally slick so I am cautious. My recommendation would be to go
to the home center and get some of the texture that they stir into house
wall paint. Get the fine to medium stuff but make sure it is sand or silica
based and not plasic or styrofoam stuff. Then add it to a Rustoluem paint
that is designed for galvanized steel.
If the galvanize was good, above about 10 foot, I would only paint the
bottom and side, not the top of anything I would be stepping on.
I would personally prefer not to paint, but this is what I would do.

Some of you may be aware of my continuing litigation
against my town for their denial of a tower permit.
Yesterday, I received a decision from a NY State Supreme Court
judge annulling the ZBA's decision and calling them
"irrational, arbitrary and capricious."
Needless to say, I was overjoyed by this, but there
was some fine print (isn't there always?). The judge
didn't direct the town to grant me a permit but instead
directed us to arrive at a compromise together. Among
the possible examples cited by the judge was painting
the tower so it would blend in with the surrounding forest.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Specifically
can I make this suggestion in good faith? I am looking
for information on tower paints (other than ORANGE and WHITE)
that would hold up on a galvanized steel surface and wouldn't
hamper my safety and ability to climb the tower.

And every year that little club goes out and trys it's darndest to win a
contest called the Pensylvania QSO party. It's held a week or 2 before
CQWW. And every year a bunch of FRC boys go out and churn up nice big
scores for that little club and give them to it and they win! The stats are
that in DLARC only the top 15 scores alone wouuld be needed to win that
contest and of those top 15 scores last year 13 belonged to FRC members
including my 1st place MM.
Did FRC care NO is DLARC happy to get the trophy every year YES would they
win with out the FRC scores NO. So I really think that the "big" clubs do
help out the "little" clubs a lot I know FRC helped me to get into this
hobby a lot more deeply than I set out to. By the way I use the quotes for
the big and little since I believe DLARC has more members than FRC does!
You just don't here a lot of the Walkie Talkie crowd on durring ARRL DX.
