On the dvk.. I have the same model and received it 2 hours prior to the start
of a contest... and had to pull it out - see below
By listening to the xmit audio on 2nd rig I found that the mic gain and dvk
output gain settings critical and interacting... When set properly the dvk
audio crystal clear on the 2nd rig - and ditto for the microphone - BUT NOT
AT THE SAME SETTINGS... Haven't given up yet... I am going to run the output
of the dvk and the output of the Heil mic into a quad op amp configured as an
audio mixer... This will allow me to adjust the gain of each circuit
independent of the others and additionally, allow me to have separate rtty
and packet tnc audio inputs with the output levels all equalized...then I can
set and forget the mic gain on the rig :) and I will be a happy camper....

COMMENTS:
Had a really GREAT time. I knew several serious guys would be going
SOAB/LP and it was really fun to be in a horse race again (even though
no win). I met many personal challenges and lost at least one (over slept).
Forced myself to bed at 5:15am local time for first night. Got up
at 6:00am, ready to go. Hit the wall at 2am the next night. Set alarm
for 3:30am local....never heard it. Wife kicked me out at 5am (tnx!).
Very groggy, took shower, sat down at rig...ouch...my butt hurts!
CONTESTER'S DIET: Well, I had Chinese food before the start. It tasted
great...and got me sick! Nobody mentioned about eating BAD FOOD in the
diet comments. <------ THIS IS IMPORTANT :-)
Spent the next 6 hours in pain, made tolerable by concentrating on the
contest. Not a great way to go (pun intended). Didn't eat ANYTHING
for the balance of the 'test....had toast for dinner Sunday after 'test.
I know I didn't "win" the category, but I sure did have a GREAT TIME
despite the early misery; and there's always next year. ;-)
Finally, thanks to AA2U and WA0QOA for helping get the 40m beam up.

Comments: Great conditions overall! Couldn't find any room to
run on 20 Sunday AM, later found a spot between W3LPL and W9RE
and was doing ok until ZD8X parked on my frequency...no argument
there! Thoughts for the future: (1) lay more radials under the
inv-L (2) add another leg to the half-sq and make it a bobtail...
need the gain (3) put up another tower with *BIG* beams so I can
hold a frequency!
This was my "personal best" effort and I'm proud of the results;
had a 97Q/27C hour (1200Z) Saturday...didn't have time to watch the
rate meter, but had several 4/min Q rates in the log--invigorating!
73, and tnx to all
