Ten Tec advises a friend of mine that the Titan amp is no longer
available, and has not been made for some months. Now I was just at
the point of upgrading from my old Drake L7 to something large and
ceramic. The matching amp for my Omni 6 would have been nice.
Dont want the Centurion or the Hercules. Anyone got inside info on the
Titan situation pse ?

...........once again ham radio cycles through it's history.
in the sixties (& early 70's I think) there was a killer device called the
octopus which would prevent two rigs simultanesously x-mitting. It was honed
by some of this reflector's readers. Those being the Sweepstakes' dynamic
multi-single duo WA5LES/K5PFL (nowadays known as K5RC and K5NA)....the
interlock would keep one from going from m-s to m-m by avoiding simultaneous
xmitting (hmmmm - sound familiar to any refelctor readers????)
I understand that K5NA is moving back to TX with KU2Q, so dunno if he is up
and running on the reflector....and I think K5RC secretly monitors these
posts.....
If one of them would care to elucidate on their ole 'pus it would serve to
answer todays needs of the single op two radio gang - myself included....
after last weekend and my fingers constanly going for the ESC key to kill
x-mitting I suspect these guys could help us keep from re-inventing the
wheel.
The octopus was outlawed back then, but among other things it generated some
interesting contest-lore....I once heard tale of an operation by the
Connecticut Wireless Association one Field Day where one of the operators
was, Mr Voice on your CQ Loop, K1ANV (W3ZZ)...
Gene was one of the 'phone ops (of course) and he would try and "capture"
the octopus, and the opportunity to be the next to xmit, by saying over and
over and over:
doubleyou doubleyou doubleyou doubleyou doubleyou..........
(and then when the relay would close)
One Tango X-ray portable one. (W1TX/1)
....although it was before my time I can just imagine Gene rolling the
doubleyous...
Before we reinvent the wheel lets hear from of the ocopusses former users!

Hi,
I recently came up with a simple mechanism for ensuring one transmit signal
(only) at a time. This scheme seems to work well with RTTY and SSB, but I
am wondering if there is a better way for CW? Below is a description of the
scheme I devised.
Please excuse the bandwidth if you saw it on the RTTY reflector!
The simple scheme uses the FT-990 REMOTE 8-pin DIN jack on the rear of
the radio. A switch inside the radio (S6801) enables a mechanical relay
with common, normally open (N/O), and normally closed (N/C) contacts as
shown below. My proposal is to run the PTT for radio #2 through the N/C
contact of the relay. When the FT-990 is keyed, it becomes open and
radio #2 is off the air.

NOTE: The internal switch must be activated to enable the relay. Before
selecting the relay a switching transistor is connected to pin 4.
The PTT line of the RTTY TU or SSB Mic is fitted with a phono plug and jack.
To bypass the lockout, just plug them together. Otherwise, plug in the
cable
to the REMOTE jack.
Running the CW key line through the PTT of the other radio keyline seems it
would result in a chopped up mess on radio #2.
How can I positively lockout radio #2 for CW use (simply)? Any comments?

Comment: Tropical storm hit Saturday morning between XX9 & VS6. Lost two
banana trees, but only antenna damage was HF2V guys breaking &
tangling in OSCAR array (those plus 2-el quad on 6m tower are all
on 5 x 10m roof). Also lost one HF2V radial due to excessive
vegetation loading. UU5J worked 5 bands, RU6LWZ on 4 (missed 80),
RU1A & UA4WGU also on 4 (missed 10). Gave up last hour due to
rain static - lightning discharges were not frequent enough to
hear!
