Equipment Description:
FT-1000D
80 & 40 meter High SWR dipole @ 30 feet
80-10 meter ground mounted trap vertical with 4 radials.
Comments:
No equipment failures except the fan in the FT-1000 is getting loud.
Saturday night was mediocre here so I crashed at 0700z. At 13:00z
I awoke to a pretty good 40 meters, but 15 meters yielded great runs.
Best score I ever had -- worse antennas I've ever used. Kind of like
Field Day from my spare bedroom. Due to flooding here I couldn't get
the tower up at the new QTH (hole filled with water, house didn't).
I don't even have anything grounded, maybe thats why I didn't have any
RFI in the FIF232 CAT interface.
Happiness is working that next to the last mult with 9 hours left in
the test. I hate being teased by elusive KL7s that can't be found
unless they are operating from stateside. I worked 2 and had to
ask for fills on the section because I couldn't believe it wasn't so.
Had a blast. I don't think I'll miss the Blackhole so much now
because the propagation in Texas as compared to Michigan is so much
better and you can work on antennas all winter long.

Here's another scenario that happened several times during SS:
I call CQ and get two responses. One gives his callsign which I copy.
The other sends "?" which I assume is a request to repeat of my
callsign. I respond to the first station. Turns out the "?" is really
a request to see if the frequency is clear. Since I didn't respond they
assume it's clear and start CQing.
Or maybe this is just another tricky way to steal a frequency :-)

My thoughts on SS CW
1. QRPers sending the exchange twice-hmmm this never happened
with the Q stns I worked nor did I send my exchange more than
once-I think most who operate Q power have confidence that if
someone picked out the call they could copy the exchange-this
year I got a lot of repeats on the call-its SH not SS
2.Losing a run freq-hey it happens-I know running only 5 watts at
some point someone will assume the freq is clear and blast
away-its something you have to live with!
3. Propagation complaints-you guys in the alleged black hole have
it easy! if conditions are bad they are even worse up here! 15
and 10 had no life whatsoever on Sunday and 20 was not much
better-I shudder to think what VY1JA and VE8RCS have to live
with!

In CW SS, a friend and I went to DE, hoping to be a (relatively) rare section.
We used my call - KD4D.
Should we have signed KD4D/3, at least when running, to attract attention?
Please mail me your comments and I'll summarize if I hear anything. :-)
While I'm here, we used the same CHECK during the entire contest. Some
stations were changing the CHECK as the operator changed. Which is the
"right" way?
Thanks and 73.

Subject: Anyone using a MODEM as a serial port?
Message-ID: <199411081520.KAA17536@analog.eng.umd.edu>
I have use of a nice laptop courtesy of my employer. I use it during most
contests. It only has one serial port and it is difficult (i.e. expensive)
to add more. However, it does have a PCMIA modem.
I ought to be able to connect another modem and create a second serial port.
Is anyone doing this? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?
Thanks for any and all responses.

Didn't plan a full-time operation due to poor planning on the part of my
wife's chorus - had a concert Saturday night. Didn't plan on flooding
the bathroom Sunday morning while trying to install new sink or the old
friend who wanted to play golf Sunday afternoon. Had fun anyway and have
SS/CW on my 1995 calendar for a full-timer.
Missed several easy mults: MAR, PQ
Missed some I usually get: ME, VT, DE, ND, SK, AB
Missed the hard ones: PAC, AK, NWT, and the elusive NE
