In the spirit of bleeding-heartism, why not just make (almost) EVERYONE
a winner ?
Each station should submit their longitude/latitude (to the nearest
second) with their contest entry. "The Computer" would then compare
a station's score with all of his neighbors scores and determine the
nearest neighbor that beat his score. If W1BIGGUN was located 12 km from
WH1NE then WH1NE would receive a certificate for FIRST PLACE station
in the 11 km radius category. W1BIGGUN's certificate might be for
1st in the 1563km category. Specific categories could be set up:
10000km, 1000km, 100km, 10km, 1km, (1m ?)etc. This would give
all participatnts something to shoot for, and make everyone feel
warm and fuzzy when they get their certificate. Of course the
"boxes" would have to be distributed in a publication that resembles

Get rid of the Division winners listing. Since the division box does not
list the scores, it is very hard to compare the winner of the Rocky Mtn.
division with the winner of the Dakota division, for example.
I know, you can't get rid of the division winner listing without getting
flak from the division directors !

This is an EXCELLENT idea. Now if I wish to eliminate my competition, I
have the launch co-ordinates for my handy dandy surplus ISBM weapons
delivery system. Gives new meaning to term BIG GUN!

Wait a minute......Listing the division winners is the only regional
recognition there currently is. If it goes, we better get something very
substantial in return. I guess thats what you are saying.
The current contests write-ups are poor. Not just in QST. QST and others have
been ignoring input to the reporting for years. It looks like they are now
finally listening. I believe this is 100 % due to the outcry on this reflector.
By the way, the absolute worst example of the "Top Ten" box is found in the
June VHF contest write ups. VHF contests are regional contests. Regional
contests should have regional recognition. Do you know who gets plaques in the
June contest? Not division winnners, but top ten "winners". Give me a major
break here. Its possible to come in 10th in your section and "earn" a plaque. I
did offer to sponsor a Pacific Division or a 6th call letter plaque. QST did
respond:"NOT INTERESTED".

This is not a terrific idea. This means that I have to give up my call,
even though I have had it for 20 years. For some people, it would be
even worse. K2GL, were he still alive, would have to give up his call,
because he had an Advanced Class license and his callsign would be in
the wrong group.
Another example is a long-time fixture on the Austin ham scene: Zeke, W5NFC.
He is the trustee of the UT-Austin ham club, W5EHM, and he was licensed in
1946. Looks like Zeke is going to have to change his callsign because W5NFC
is in the General Class group and he has an Extra Class ticket. Bummer.

This would force many people to involuntarily give up long held
calls. I've had mine for 32 years and have sorta grown attached to it.
Why should I be penalized for having an Extra. If someone, hearing my
call, thinks I'm in the wrong part of the band, there are a lot of data
bases, call books, etc. to check it in. Would you suggest people be
forced to change their names to reflect their occupation, wealth, or
race? That would be more efficient too.
