I use a Heil PR40 with a Yaesu FTdx9000D. It gives outstanding audio
(according to majority of listeners) with/without processing. Results are
the same using a Heil Pro-Set Plus.
Sounds as if you have a problem with your rig. I would borrow another mic
to detect the problem (mic or rig).

I concur with Fern. I have tried many microphones over the years, and one
of the best microphones I have ever used is the black colored Shure 444D
(not to be confused with the older grey colored 444). No matter which rig I
have run over the years (781, Pro2, TS950SD, TS870S, FT1000, etc) I always
reverted back to my tried and true 444D. Much better sounding than any of
the Heil stuff I've played with, regardless of the rig.

Hart: If you want excellent audio, I would suggest that you acquire a good
dynamic microphone such as the Shure 444D desk microphone. Even though
they're an older mic, it's not too difficult to find them used at the flea
markets or on line. You'll have excellent transmit audio without or with
using the speech processor. I have used them for many years on a large
variety of rigs and alway get excellent comments on my transmit audio. Years
ago, I tried the Heil series of mics with louzy results. I hope that this
doesn't offend the heil fans but that's been my findings. Cheers from Fern
