I solved the problem and wanted to share it for others who may run into the
same thing.
First, the set screw that holds the knob on requires a 2mm allen wrench.
You should try not to back the set screw completely out, but if you do it is
not a big problem.
No matter how hard I tried to pull on the knob, it would not come off the
shaft. The knob did have some wiggle (the reason I was trying to remove
it).
I took two small flat blade screw drivers and inserted them between the knob
and the radio front panel. One on each side. I then gently pried with both
of them at the same time. The knob then popped right off. Be careful not
to pry so hard or fast that you make a mark on the front panel (I didn't
have any problem with this).
Once the knob was off, I was able to tighten the retaining ring that holds
the encoder/shaft to the front panel. That fixed the wiggle!
If the set screw backed out, you should be able to shake the knob and hear
it rattle around inside. I have had some luck with just shaking the knob
with the hole facing down and the set screw comes out. If not, you just
have to unscrew three screws to remove the two halves of the knob. This is
easy and without risk.
Get the set screw restarted into the knob before you place it back on the
radio. Push the knob all the way on and then retighten the set screw.
It all seems simple enough once you have done it once!
