Chuck;
The '1000D is different then the current style of computer
controlled radios. It sounds like the radio doesn't match
operating style more than performance. I'm not saying that
there's something wrong with what you are doing. It just
is
what it is. I would recommend that you find a way to
evaluate
the MK V before you part with the 1000D. There are many
reviews of
this radio on e-ham where a comment is made about wishing
they had never
sold their 1000D.
The radio's notch filter performance can be improved be
carefully
going through the alignment of the last I.F. The filter
is just a
LC network and has to be right on to work well, and it
does drift.
Check the switching diodes in the front end. I check them
by tuning
in a 5KW AM radio station that's one half mile away, on a
good
outside antenna and with the RF amp on. If I only hear it
on one spot
on the dial, they're OK. The pin diode that switches the
transmitter
can get noisy here. The RF down the coax is around +8DBm.
Good luck with your chouces.

Hey gang,
I just got done using my ft1000d for the 1st time in
crowded band cndx during
the SS, & was less than impressed. To be honest, I
prefer my ICOM 746 over
this thing, due to the auto-notch & ANF. The notch on
the 1000d is useless.
So, I was thinking of selling the D & buying a new MK V,
what are you
opinions of both rigs side by side. I have no use for
the dual RX, never use it, I do
SO2R (single-op, 2 radio) during contests.

Yes, the notch is not great on the 1000D. But otherwise
they are about equal
in performance. I would hate to give up the option of
being able to receive
on 2 different bands even though I might not use it too
often. If you need
noise reduction and auto notch, get a external dsp
unit. The dsp is not in
the agc loop on a MkV anyway. I like big radios with big
knobs. Do the W8JI
noise blanker mod for better receive IMD performance.
You'll have a super
radio. Used 1000Ds are going for about the same price as
a new MkV. Not a
great trade in my book but your mileage may vary, as
they say. If you want
to sell your 1000D let me know. I might be interested.

John N1JM
