clear that the service person was talking nonsense and that the thing is
perfectly suitable for both mains frequencies.
Not too long ago, what the service person told you would probably have been
correct & would sometimes be mentioned in magazine product reviews
(usually USA domestic model being taken to Caribbean for holiday & therefore
used with 50 cycle mains with expected results from not having enough core
in the transformer).
This is a classic technique used by the Japanese consumer electronics industry
to keep some control over what happens out in the various markets - though as
time goes by, there is less & less of it now.
