Hello Steve,
I don't think you can go wrong with either radio....they are both excellent.
I have owned both and actually had them operating side-by-side for awhile. I
ended up keeping the 1000MP. I think that the biggest differences are that
the D is 200 W out and the MP is 100 out and the D offers the capability of
X-Band operation with dual receive while the MP offers dual receive
operation on the same band only. I NEVER used the X-Band dual receive with
the D and while 200 watts was nice for barefoot operation, I was always
afraid I was going to forget to turn the power down and toast my amp, which
only needs 40 W input.
If you NEED 200 W, then the D is your choice. Otherwise, I would recommend
the MP. The receiver is every bit as good, if not better than the D, it
offers DSP (extremely useful for tailoring your transmit audio and handy on
receive), it is a newer design.....although 3 yrs old at this time and it is
a joy to use. Ergonomically, it is really pretty easy to use. If you are a
cw operator, you will need to get at least the 500 hz Collins filter. I
don't want to bias you too much, but I recommend the MP......but either
radio is outstanding.
I was just on the AES site this morning.....they are selling the MP on a
special for $2599.....I think there is a Yaesu special going on (maybe a
coupon special from Yaesu). That's a great price! I am not associated with
AES...just thought I'd mention. Perhaps HRO and other dealers have same type
of deal.
Well, good luck! Let me know what you decide and if you have any questions.

George

Subject: [Yaesu] MP or D ???
GM all;
I'm new to this ref so don't know protocall etc so pse bear w/me. I'm
excited! XYL has given GO for purch of new xcvr after almost 20 yrs using
the
good ol' 101ZD!! Life is short, so I'm going for the best; either a MP or
1000D. I know the specs es tech info as I've been researching the issue for
abt 6 mos. Now I need a consensus. Question is to u guys/gals? who have
owned both and have an opinion. I have tried an MP at HRO, but that kinda
use
is not too interesting. Not my ant., unkn cx etc. DXing, contesting, CW are
my interest. I think I understand all the usual rhetoric, MP newer, has
EDSP; D is heavier, more output really 2 rcvrs etc etc. What I want to know
from prev owners is what ur feelings were after u made the change. This may
give me some clues as to which way to go. I plan on buying either as
'loaded' all the B&W. Tnx in advance fer ur opinion. Can u hekp? I'm
leaning
slightly to the D.
