One other subtle difference I've noticed is that my newer one, a 5N06xxxx
has some ventilation holes over the CPU board the my older 5F01xxxx does
not.

I've long since had my older one back to Yaesu and had all the mods put in.
They all work well, but I havent found that the Heil headphone mod is
necessary. I never have my unmodded one up above 1 oclock, and that's on a
dead band.

One unofficial mod I did to both of my radios that I highly recommend for
those running RTTY or other digital modes, is to cut the Mute line to the RX
squelch circuit. Some of you may have noticed that you can disable the
annoying beep tone that the radio emits everytime you change something on
the front panel. However, this doesnt disable an accompanying momentary
Mute signal from the microprocessor that squelches the RX audio while the
radio is supposed to be beeping! The cure is just to cut the line somewhere
on the PCB's. You'll now hear some more pops and such when you switch
filters, etc., but this is much less annoying than the loss of data that
occurs otherwise.
