Brian, I used an electret mike with the Yaesu FT-1000 for years and got
outstanding reports. I used the little Radio Shack unit that sells for
$2.99. As the FT-1000, like the FT-990, does not supply voltage for the
OP-AMP in the mike, I used a little Radio Shack box, a "D" cell battery
holder, and suitable plugs on each end of the box. One end went to the mike
plug on the FT-1000, and the other end went to the mike. The battery was
connected across the battery wires of the mike, and was just 1.5 volts
(single cell). The little mike button was put in a mike case that I had
laying around.
This has worked great for me right up to a few days ago when I sold the
FT-1000. The audio reports were always outstanding, and the other station
was usually amazed that I was using a RS 2.99 mike. I strongly recommend
it, as the input to both the FT-1000 and the FT-990 are the same, as far as
I know.
