I think the help file should clarify exactly what gets loaded where.
For example, in XP, there is a folder on every desktop called "Shared
Documents." When you share your disk with other computers on the network, the
ONLY place they will be allowed to look around is in that "Shared Documents"
folder. If I understand the WL help file correctly, only ONE computer on the
network should have a shared log file in a folder called Shared Documents. All
the operating positions should have an identically named *.wl file (clones of
the original) located on the local disk but NOT in the shared file folder.
Saving the file with Alt-S will then save the local Qs in the local copy. Once
saved, they become available for linking. Is this correct?
When the operating positions "Link to Network" they look for that master copy
in the shared documents folder located on the sole machine dedicated for the
purpose of linking stuff together. The single machine hosting that shared log
must then be set to "Allow Network Connections" and the behind the scenes code
in WL will do the handshaking to link up all the files.
Is this correct? Otherwise, I would love it if somebody would clarify what
files are to be located where and on which machine on the network when running
XP.
By the way, I think XP altered the way shared files are shared many updates
ago--SP2 maybe? When I first started running XP about 3 years ago, one machine
on a peer-to-peer could peek into and alter other disk drives with relative
ease. Now, peers can only look into the shared folder unless substantive
intervention is performed to allow for this activity. It could very well be
that firewall operations have changed substantially since Wayne originally
set-up WL for XP...
