Thanks to all those who helped me with my migration from an IBM T20
running Win 2000 Pro to an IBM T42 running Win XP Pro. I'm now fully
back on the air. Whew!
I had a devil of a time getting parallel port access to work.
Previously, userport had done the trick, but not on the T42!
Everything I tried with userport, Device Manager, T42 configuraiton
controls and a little black magic was to no avail - The parallel ports
remained grayed out in WL Setup|Ports. Wayne told me directio would
work but it didn't seem to at first. A little correspondence with
Michael Paule of Direct-io showed that I was using directio
incorrectly. He has an application note on his website that explains
clearly and simply what to do (and what NOT to do!) to run Writelog
with directio and it worked as explained. There is also a nifty
problem reporting utility that extracts all the info from your machine
that Michael needs to figure out what you have done and then puts it
into an email to him. After getting the 30 day evaluation version
working (in 2 days), I immediately used the online order facility to
order a full license ($29). I highly recommend Direct-io.
For the record, the station is of above-average complexity. This new
computer has no serial port. I'm using two two-port USB-serial
converters. One drives an MP and a 930 via COM2 and COM3 as Rig L and
R respectively. The other drives a K1EL WinKey and an M2 RC2800P rotor
control via COM4 and COM5. The parallel port connects to a Top Ten DX
Doubler. I have full SO2R and can key the rigs through either the
WinKey or the parallel port. I'm a happy WL camper!
