Thanks Ken.
My apologies for not commenting on the ZL6A sig matter - I think you will be
pleased with the performance of all the antennae, which reflects the well
engineered approach you applied to the construction of them. Well done. Just
think how the proposed Quad on the big tower will perform.

Thanks to K0CF for pointing out that this feature already exists.

The switch to enable this goes in the WriteLog.ini file under
[Configuration] and is:
  MoveNextOnEnter=1

Good idea, Chris. How about "Alternative Contesting Mode" (ACM vs. AM ...
so that some folks won't think it is a switch for Amplitude Modulation
:-) Actually, some of these same 'alternative' capabilities are needed
for "Alternative Voice-Automation"...not just CW, so my bad for not
clarifying.

What a great tip, which dovetails with a tip one NCCC member shared with a
few of us this weekend out by the BBQ at N6RO's (I video taped our NCCC
SO2R Clinic v1.0 duing part of the IARU contest :-)

If you're called by a JA station, chances are pretty good it is a 6
character callsign. So if you're a fast typist, just pause before typing
in the last few characters. Let's see, this would probably also apply to
most SM, etc. stations as well.

Multiply "a little time" saved on each Q (times) thousands of Q's and it
really adds up!!!

Yes, it is very, very "sweet" ... a good description! And if you're using
it set at 3, you deserve an award for bravery :-)

The Locust is a bit insulting when he suggests an advanced CW mode that
does little "advancement" for those of us who can type reasonably well. If
he needs a crutch for poor typing skills, then maybe we should call it
that.

Exactly, how about CM=1 to enable it, Crutch Mode

While typing is not my downfall, my cw copying skills and my station
are. I'm rarely blessed with operating from a station/location that my
rate is high enough to warrant keeping my hands that close to the home
row. Frankly, the extra 1/10 second it takes to reach over to the
insert key, or enter, doesn't make any difference in my overall score -
even after "all those q's".

If additional features can be added without effecting the ease of use
for the casual/occational contester, then I'm all for it.

HA! But it's not really about the typing as much as NOT having to do some
*unnecessary* things...and using more Automation for a significant
time-savings. As previously stated, I now like the term "Alternative
Contesting Mode" vs. the initial suggestion.

Like yourself, I took a typing class in school. It was in the 9th grade,
because the class was primarily made up of cute girls :-) Back then, I got
to 120WPM with no errors on a 5 minute timed test. But now at 61, umh, I
am too often Mr. fumble-fingers. That's one reason the weekly NCCC NS
"practice sessions" are so good.

I'll buy you a pitcher of beer at the next NCCC meeting and we can chat in
more detail about this issue.

Yes, the most useful class in high school was typing... for more reasons
than the obvious .. :-)

Perhaps we can just call this stuff "TR Mode"? WL already has a "CT mode"
function that can be turned on/off.

WriteLog already has the ability to begin sending an exchange before you
complete the call. It just isn't automatic as you suggest. I'm not sure
why, but I use that feature extreamly rarely. The vast majority of calls I
copy are typed in complete with only a few mSec of latency. I just type
the call and hit ENTER (or whatever). The timing seems normal to me and I
don't see any wasted time.

Hitting an extra key here and there doesn't really bother me. If it takes
10 mSec to hit the space bar, I waste only 50 seconds after doing that
5,000 times. My thumb could use the exercise anyway. The goal of high rate
is much more related to copying the call correctly the first time rather
than saving a key stroke here and there.

It isn't D4B sending 45 wpm that worries me. It's WB6BID/7 sending 15 wpm
that causes trouble. At that speed, you'll type in each character as you
hear it. With the TR method, you'll start sending and miss the "D"
resulting in a busted call and a real QLF situation. I would not remember
to NOT type in the full call in that situation. How do you deal with that?

BTW, my original post was not really ment to go public. I wrote it, then
thought it was a tad too strong. In a fit of spastic QLF I hit the SEND
key instead of the DELETE key. Sorry about that!

I'll buy that next pitcher!

Amen. The top-tier operators that I've watch operate can type in 75% of
the callsigns of the stations calling them BEFORE the calling station is
even finished transmitting. Their isn't any amount of "automation" in
the world that can make up for this kind of skill. It's just sheer
call-recognition and memory developed over years of practice. This kind
of talent, not how many times the space bar is pressed or what the enter
key does, is what gets one into the top ten box.
