Patrick is right on the mark. For the last year or so I have used a tool
called Advanced Registry Doctor. It can autmatically prune stale registry
entries. You can download a trial from:
http://www.elcor.net/
There is a "Pro" and a "lite" version. I paid to register the Pro version, but
lite may be free.
