I wanted the W5XD keyer to use only as a keyer too, as I have only one
radio. I wanted to use it with DXbase, as the keying on a serial port
worked fine in Writelog, but I couldn't get the serial port keying to work
correctly with DXbase. The W5XD keyer works fine with both programs.
I found one used on qth.com. The older ones may need an EPROM and maybe an
optoisolator update though. The EPROM just plugs in, but the optoisolators
need to be unsoldered and soldered. Both can be had for about $25, so
factor that into the used price.
The Winkey (http://www.k1el.com/) looks very nice, though it is a kit and
seems to be sold without packaging or connectors for the paddle, battery,
and key line. Selling it with a case, the connectors, and the analog speed
control would be more attractive to me.

Yes, Wayne has the Multikeyer product and I understand it's quite good.
But it includes a lot of SO2R switching that makes it, at $210
assembled, seven times more expensive than the Winkey at $30 kit. That's
fine if you need the switching, but lots of folks already own a DX
Doubler or equivalent and don't need a $210 keyer. I would buy it in a
minute otherwise. Sure hope Wayne decides to support Winkey or some
other inexpensive external keyer. He could also offer a stripped down
"Unikeyer" or the like that just does keying and looks to his software
like the Multikeyer. I'd buy that.
