Hi Brian,

Note that you cannot have embedded spaces (or other punctuation)
within the computer names. Win 95 truncates the computer name at the first
space character. Thus the following happens:

Computer name What 95 uses What XP uses
------------- ------------ ------------
        WIN 95 "WIN" "WIN 95"
        WIN 98 "WIN" "WIN 98"
        WIN XP "WIN" "WIN XP"
        Win "WIN" "Win"
        Win Machine "WIN" "Win Machine"

They all three translate to the same name as far as 95 is concerned, but
they remain as three different names as far as Win XP is concerned. Thus for
all 5 examples above, NetBIOS will not link. Nothing that Writelog can do
about this, it's a feature of Windows.

The first thing to do is to see what Win 95 thinks it is talking to via
NetBIOS. Use the nbtstat -c command from a DOS box prompt. It will show you
all the computers that the NetBIOS table holds on your computer. Issue the
same command on the Win 98 and Win XP computers.

        1. The table on each computer should have (at least) 3 different
computer names (one per named computer).
        2. Each computer's table must know about all 3 of the machines.
        3. The three computer names must resolve uniquely and exactly the
same on all the different computers.

All three tables should have (at least) 3 entries with identical names,
although they may not be in the same order (they are listed in discovery
order, not in alphabetic order). Until you can see all 3 computers in the
NetBIOS table, and identify them with unique names, Writelog networking will
not work.

C:>nbtstat -c (or from any drive or path)

The second step is kind of the opposite - make sure that all three computers
have the same Windows logon name and the same Windows logon password. This
is a Writelog requirement (according to the help files), Windows doesn't
care here.

NetBUEI and NetBIOS are not the same thing. NetBUEI is an enhanced user
interface (EUI) for NetBIOS, but it is not used by Writelog. Writelog does
however use the underlying NetBIOS. NetBUEI does not have to be installed
anywhere, but there is no harm done if it is.
