I've experimented with a Griffin Technology iMic which is a
USB/Audio device. As far as usability, it was very simple.
Just plug it in and go. http://www.griffintechnology.com
My thought was to put all of the rig interfaces into one,
little box including PTT/FSCK/Audio and then only have a
single USB connection to the computer. If done well, it
should be easy to keep the stray RF out.
However, there is a good reason why firewire exists --
it is isochronous. USB is not isochronous. Where you
will notice this difference is in audio or video streams
which need to be isochronous or you get skips. After
just a little bit of tinkering, I decided that the skips
outweighed the convenience and went back to the
builtin audio :-(.
