I believe I have the same problem with my new DELL INSPIRON 5100 which
has no serial port. The keyer does not use the serial port as a true
serial port and as such USB to serial adaptors do not work. I had to
revert to my older Inspiron 7000 which has a serial port to get the
keyer to work. This could be a problem for many as most of the new
laptops have no serial or parallel ports. I think it is a general
problem for ham radio with computers that it is hard to keep relatively
low volume products up to date with the fast turn around of the high
volume computer market.

At work we bought several new Sony Vaio notebooks w/o serial ports and
w/o
floppy drive. After several days trying various USB to serial converters
we returned the Sonys and bought new Dell lap tops that included a real
serial port and a floppy (and came with Win2k per our request!!)
We discovered that XP will NOT support a USB to serial port adapter if
the
computer has no serial port of its own to start with. There must be some
way around this, but we couldn't find one and we returned the Vaios.
